Make Your Own!
Started by: Amanda Heyden
Hi everyone!
You may already know that I will be travelling to SE Asia for 40 days, to take part in a backpacking-style volunteer trip with Operation Groundswell in the spring. BUT you might not know why I'm going or what I'll be doing there! I've been stuck in the same place, doing the same thing, for quite some time. I'm looking to challenge myself, get out of my comfort zone, experience life, cultures and perspectives that are different from my own!
Operation Groundswell is a non-profit organization located in Toronto, which focuses on ethical travel, while partnering with local NGOs/charities around the world. OG's volunteer programs combine community service, with an educational program to understand local challenges before helping to solve them. Part of my program requirement is to raise funds that will be donated entirely, to the various partner organizations I will volunteer with throughout my trip. These organizations include:
Ockenden Cambodia
Ockenden aims to improve rural self-reliance, working with small farmers on sustainable agricultural systems and techniques.
Mekong Turtle Conservation Center
Soft shell turtles are a critically endangered species. MTCC gathers hatchlings from the nearby Mekong River. Raising these hatchlings in captivity gives turtles the head start they require, before being released back into the wild.
The Elephant Valley Project
The EVP is a sanctuary which provides an alternative approach to elephant care, in their natural environment. The sanctuary also provides employment for local people, good working conditions and assistance in the protection of land and resources.
Anything donated will be greatly appreciated, as it will support the local charities that influence my personal growth throughout my life-changing journey!
