Hey!

I’m Ben and I’m going to be riding my bike from Los Angeles to Indianapolis, starting in a few months, for a reason that has been a quarter century in the making. When I was eight, I was sexually abused by a person in my church. It took me over 20 years to be able to speak openly about it.

Now that I’ve been able to put it behind me, for the most part, I want to do something positive to encourage others to speak out or help process their own personal experiences. No one should have to stay quiet and confused for that long,

And, I love cycling! It’s been a constant in my life for about 15 years and has taught me a great deal about perseverance, emotional management, and even just how to clear my head. I could sit on my ass and take donations, but I want to do something difficult in solidarity.

Whitney, my best friend and girlfriend, has taken responsibility of the financial aspects, and she's been a great example of a person I can talk to about this stuff. Her law degree certainly has helped us set up the donation stuff, too.

If you're able, you can help in two ways:

1. By donating to our “EVERY MILE” donation fund directly. (The CONTRIBUTE or GO button) It will be used to help organizations like Prevent Child Abuse: Indiana in order to help get people talking and thinking about a real issue.

2. You can support my ride by sponsoring a part of it. (Look for the WISHLIST) I'm doing this because it's difficult, so any part of it that I know someone is kind enough to support financially will make it just a little easier to get through. (To make it a little simpler, I've figured each day will cost me about $30, averaging in food, camping, minor repairs, etc. No hotels or fancy meals this trip!)

Feel free to take part in one or both, just as long as it's what you're comfortable with. My hope is that kids (and adults) will see that they aren't alone and they don't have to be scared, and we want every mile and every donation to have a positive effect on a tough situation.

Below are links to the Instagram account that we'll be updating with totals and stuff about the ride, an email address we'll be checking, and a link to the Youtube channel where you can watch the progress. Message either of us with questions and support. And feel free to share this if you think it might help someone you know.

Thanks for taking the time to read and think.

Love,

Ben & Whitney

  • Julie (Russ) Gulden4 years ago Ben, what a great idea. Wish I’d heard about this earlier but glad I found out before you finished. Thinking of you and grateful for your friendship way back in high school. I hate that you were abused but I am not surprised you are using your experience to help others. Best wishes.
