Thank you in advance for your time and consideration.
People of the Global Majority are holding their 3rd summit this May in Philadelphia. Their vision is “a more equitable and inclusive US environmental and outdoor movement where people of all racial and ethnic identities feel not only that they belong, but that they have the power to shape the vision for the future of our environment and outdoors.” The themes this year are resilience, self-care, and healing. I submitted a proposal for a workshop focused on resilience and self-care, which was accepted. Your assistance will pay for housing for May 7 - 11 and material for the workshop.
Over 3 hours, the workshop participants and I will engage in a 3-hour interactive workshop. The objective is to support each other in building individual strategies for self-care and resilience as we engage in environmental activism, and work for equity and representation in predominantly white institutions such as outdoor reactional companies or environmental organizations. Every day in big and small ways our actions create our world. The beliefs, practices, and policies of the past created the world we navigate today. They inflicted harm and trauma on people and their communities. I believe we can shift our society to one of care, resilience, and well-being for people and our environment.
To build healthy, resilient communities, we must develop into resilient people. Many of us come to community work with a history of trauma and abuse, lived through community violence, poverty, survived the effects of colonization and the deliberate erasure of their culture. We navigated racism, anti-blackness, sexism, transphobia, and homophobia (external and internal), and a world that favors people who are neurotypical and able-bodied.
Healing and resilience are not accomplished in isolation. Participants in this workshop have an opportunity to recognize the tools they already have and add to their resources. In addition, this workshop allows another chance to people to do healing work surrounded by community.
Thank you for your support.
With love and gratitude,
Jamila
