As pet parents, we know that anything can happen at any time but are we ever really prepared for what comes our way? Our four-legged furkids rely on us to take care of them every second of every day and what they give us in return is their unconditional love.
On Sunday, February 7, 2021, Oscar had been his usual playful self all day, never letting his ball roll too far away, but during half-time, on Superbowl Sunday, we encountered every pet parent's worst nightmare. The non-productive retching, whining, and continued pacing were cause for immediate panic. Oscar was bloating. Our regular vet was closed, so off to the closest emergency hospital, we went. The 21-mile drive seemed like forever, and listening to Oscar whine in pain was even worse. I was driving as fast as I could, being careful around each turn.
X-rays revealed that his stomach was twisted, and he would need emergency surgery. Luckily, we got him there so quickly that his gums were still pink, and he was not in complete shock, so they were able to minimize his prep time. The veterinarian explained everything in great detail, even the range in fees for the services, and we stayed positive. The front desk receptionist requested the $3484.67 deposit before we headed home. Because of COVID-19, we were not allowed to stay. We received the call at almost 2 am to let us know that Oscar's surgery went well. They had a hard time decompressing his stomach, but they succeeded. Because we acted so quickly in getting him there, the blood flow had not been cut off for too long, and his spleen could be saved in whole. He remained in the hospital for two days before we could bring him home and start the long, meticulous road to recovery. Of course, the bill was more than what we had paid, so the additional $500 was paid. Marc and I said we would figure it out. His work has been so slow due to COVID, but at least we still had Oscar. We discussed the plan for his long, meticulous road to recovery. Someone had to be home for two weeks to take care of Oscar.
Our pets are like our children. We would do anything for them no matter what. Marc and I just set all our thoughts to come up with the money to pay the credit card bill later. At least Oscar was in good hands, and he is now home safely recovering.
