Digger is an older boy I took in as a stray some years ago. His previous life is a mystery, but as I got his health checked, we discovered kidney disease, a heart murmur, and severe dental decay. The veterinarian advised that we get a handle on his kidney disease before exploring options for dental surgery. This began a long process of many different medications and supplements.

Kidney disease is complicated. It causes dehydration (which in turn, causes constipation), loss of protein through urine, weight loss, nausea, and other symptoms.

He currently takes...

Epakitin to reduce phosphate levels.

Hilary's Renal Blend for overall kidney support.

Daily IV fluids for hydration (shown in photos).

A probiotic blend for digestion.

Gabapentin for oral pain (until surgery).

As well as an anti-nausea and appetite stimulant if he stops eating. I'm happy to say that after imploring these medications and therapies, we have his kidney disease under control for now. Unfortunately, kidney disease is irreversible and this will be fatal, but I pray that day won't be anytime soon.

Now that we have his kidney disease managed, we're looking at his much needed dental surgery. Due to his heart murmur, this surgery is complicated. He needs an echocardiogram to check his heart and try to ensure he survives the surgery. I'm going to be honest, we don't know if he will make it through surgery, but I know he is in good hands.

I've had a number of people ask me why I don't just put him down. The answer is simple; he's happy. He has a good life, he loves all people, other cats, even dogs. He enjoys getting in the car with me and visiting friends. He's bonded with neighbourhood cats. He enjoys going for walks on a leash to explore new places. This old boy has a lot more experiences to be had, but I want him to be able to enjoy them without pain.

Digger already costs me quite a bit in medical bills, and while trying to pay for school, this is no easy feat. However, I believe when we adopt a pet, we must understand the cost for their care later in life. I continue to pay for his medications and do his IV every day with my part time job around school. He, in turn, brings a great deal of joy to my life.

Therefore, I'm asking for help for his complicated surgery. Any little bit goes a long way. I don't expect to reach the goal, but any funds that are raised means there is less I will have to cover out of pocket. Thank you so much for taking the time to hear Digger's story and if you choose to donate, thank you so, so, SO much for helping me take care of my boy.
