In honor of my beloved father, Donald B. Focht (March 27, 1951 - October 21, 2018), my family would like to place a memorial bench and tree in a local park, greenway or wildlife preserve here in the Charlotte area in his name.

Dad will be laid to rest in our family cemetery plot in Adamstown, Pennsylvania, but it is very important to us to have a memorial here in Charlotte, North Carolina, a place he lived, loved, enjoyed and made his home for more than twenty years; something we can visit often to reflect on and remember this amazing man.

As an active outdoorsman, avid hunter, fisherman, wildlife enthusiast and general lover of the great outdoors, we believe Dad should have a beautiful place of his own amidst his favorite things.

Thank you for your love and support. Updates will be provided on exact location and installation of the memorial once plans are completed. Any additional funds will be donated to a wildlife foundation or other charity in Dad's name.

Latest Update

One more update ... If you would like to visit the memorial at the greenway, there is a much easier access point than what I posted previously. Park at the Johnston Rd. public access point and turn left right at the intersection of the McAlpine Creek and 4-mile greenways, over the bridge, and Dad's is the first bench you come to. 5 minute walk! Trees are just a few steps up the path from there. Much love, Kara

Finally, with the last of the funds you so generously donated to help us memorialize Dad, I've made a donation in his name to St. Jude's. We installed the bench and planted the trees we originally intended with this fund in the most beautiful location at the greenway in south Charlotte. It's perfect and I hope you take the time to stop by. The donations were so generous that I also was able to make a generous donation to the Carolina Raptor Center, a place Dad volunteered and which means a lot to us. He always said that after he is gone, if we see a hawk flying overhead, that is him watching over us. This last donation, for the remainder of your generosity and love, goes to St. Jude's. Dad felt strongly about St. Jude's as a charity and had a recurring monthly donation set up on his credit card. That was hard to cancel. I hope this last donation is what he would have wanted. https://www.stjude.org/donate/viewecard.html?orderId=1-1150549&lineItemId=1-1214620#token=eyJhbGciOiJBM

The donations we received were so overwhelming, and much more than we needed to install the bench and plant the trees in Dad's name that we intended. So, I decided to make a generous donation with part of the fund to the Carolina Raptor Center. Dad volunteered at the raptor center for a long time when he was well. He participated in releasing rehabilitated hawks, owls, and other raptors back into the wild (at locations much like the spot we picked for his memorial bench and trees!) as well as volunteering at the facility for feedings, which included chopping up rats and squirrels and all kinds of things to mix and feed to the birds. He loved it! The donation I've made in his name will include a brick at the facility (hopefully placed by the eagles!) that you can visit, and also a raptor release in his honor. They have a bald eagle rehabilitated and ready for release in about a month, and we are hoping to be a part of it. Stay tuned. http://www.carolinaraptorcenter.org/

Hi everyone, it's been over a year now, but I wanted to update you on Dad's memorial fund. This sweet boy stopped by Dad's bench to take a break from bicycling and his family was kind enough to send a picture. The bench, as well as the trees we planted, are in a special, beautiful spot on the greenway here in south Charlotte that I visit often. It is a safe haven to visit, and even socialize a bit (at a distance, of course) during this crazy pandemic. It makes my heart happy to see others enjoy the location. I've been busy allocating the remainder of the generous donations everyone made to celebrate the life of my beloved Dad. I will send updates on where those funds have been sent in Dad's name. Thank you and much love, Kara

One more ... This isn't the greatest photo, from the parks foundation, but you can see a little bit better here the dedication plaque on the bench. "A Life Well Lived"

This is our Wildfire Black Gum tree. It will be absolutely gorgeous in the fall months when the leaves turn a fiery purple/red color. Dedication brick just installed, as you can see they are each a little different. I went a little overboard, I know, but it's fitting for our family. There is no one who deserves a little extra more than Dad! Your donations and support were overwhelmingly more than I could have imagined, leaving room for so many options. I'm really excited to share with you the rest to come in the next week or so, please keep checking the site! Much love, Kara

The dedication bricks for the trees were also installed this week. This is our American Sycamore. It will be beautiful with it's white bark even in the drab and dreary winter months.

Great news! The memorial bench for Dad has been installed! It is just a few steps down the path from where the trees were planted, right in front of a little duck pond. This platform will only allow me to upload one photo at a time, so I will be posting a few updates here with some other photos. Apologies for multiple emails, but I want you all to see how nicely this has come together. If anyone local is interested in visiting the site, it is at the 4-Mile Greenway in South Charlotte right by the .25 mile marker. I park at the public parking area by Trader Joe's on Rea Rd. and the site is just under 1 mile in from that entrance. Walk two boardwalks, and the trees and bench will be on the cement path just before you reach the 3rd boardwalk, just past the .25 mile marker sign. It's a beautiful location, well away from the parts of the greenway where you can still hear traffic. :) I have some other wonderful things in store for the remainder of the donation $ so stay tuned!

Ok, I wasn't going to share this picture because our little newly planted trees look so sad, but I thought you should see the progress. Sycamore on the right, Black Gum on the left. Everything here in Charlotte is just starting to bloom, so I know our little trees just need some time to take root and sprout their leaves to look beautiful! This picture is from the park service. I will take my own pictures once the rest of the components of the memorial are completed. FYI- the bench pictured is not our bench. It is an existing bench belonging to the greenway. Our bench will be placed just a few steps down the path from here in front of a duck pond. Winter is letting go and Spring is here, this location is going to be amazing in just a few weeks! Stay tuned for more pictures to come. Thank you.

The trees are planted!! We have one American Sycamore, which is a wonderful fast growing shade tree for spring/summer that also has a beautiful white bark, making it lovely even in the drab winter months. We also have a Wildfire Black Gum tree, which will present a vibrant, fiery purple-red color in the fall. Two good strong trees, which should thrive in the location I have selected! Our bench should be installed any day now. I have seen the dedication plaque, and it's very simple and fitting. We are still waiting on the dedication bricks for each tree, which should be installed within the week. Thank you again for all your support!

Hello everyone! First, thank you so much for all of your support for my memorial project for Dad. It means the world to us to have so many of you send your love and contributions. I want to provide you with a quick update on the progress of the memorial. I have had my top choice location approved by the Partners for Parks Foundation! The location is a beautiful quiet spot along the 4-Mile Creek Greenway in South Charlotte. The bench will be placed on the path right in front of a little duck pond. We have decided to place two trees, a bit further down the path for best chance of longevity. Two trees, two daughters, always with the two greeting cards from Dad on birthdays and holidays, it seemed appropriate, as we always do things a little bit extra in this family. :) The trees will be planted at the end of February, the bench will take a bit longer. I'm hoping to have it finished by Dad's birthday on March 27. Stay tuned for pictures and further details. Much love, Kara
