My brother Odin is undergoing a bone marrow transplant for multiple myeloma, a rare cancer of the plasma.

This fund is to help Odin pay down the incidentals associated with the 60-day procedure (including travel, transportation to daily appointments, etc.) which aren't covered by insurance.

Your support will help us take care of Odin, ease the financial pressure on his family, and hopefully buy him some time to be there for his wife Naomi and their daughter Freya.

Latest Update

Hi everyone🙂 We are back home and the feeling is indescribable. Thank you all for your help in making an otherwise fraught process go as smoothly as possible. My condition is stable at the moment but still being assessed. I'm feeling good and that's as much as I can ask for. Hope you and your families are all doing well. Enjoy the moment at hand. Cheers, The Hills

So glad you are feeling better. Wishing only the best for you. Welcome back home

Update 11 of… Odin is going home. The numbers are looking good, and this chapter of treatment is over. Now we wait and see how long this transplant is good for. His numbers still show IgG kappa monoclonal gammopathy, but the doctors think these numbers are going to drop even further in the next 30 days. Fingers crossed, flights booked, and our time at City of Hope is over! Thank you all for helping us bear through this.

Thanks for all of the uplifting messages and support. We're so excited to finally be heading home this Thursday. Give yourself and all your family members a hug for me :-)

Update 10 of … Odin is up and running, with only mild nausea. He says he's feeling as good as he did when he landed in LA 6 weeks ago. Tomorrow Naomi and Freya will come to stay near him, and then we'll be down to the last few checkups before he heads back home. So far, so good. Now begins the waiting game—to see how successful this entire procedure is. Thank you all for your continued support and care. ❤️

Amazing! What a warrior! Enjoy having Naomi and Freya close by again xo

Update 9 of … Odin's WBC and RBC numbers are looking good. He's had a platelet transplant, and they're scheduling another one today, but overall he's doing far better than he was when we got him into the ETC. He will be discharged soon, and then we are anticipating 2 weeks to a month of observation and 3 appointments a week. He's on the other side of this process, and things are looking positive. Thank you all for your support and care for Odin.

Update 8 of… Even though his fever has subsided, it looks like Odin won't be coming back to the Hope Village room. They are finishing off the rest of his transplant process in the hospital, for at least another 4 days. Which is actually a lot nicer than the room we had. He's under 24h supervision by the able nursing staff at the Helford Clinical Research Hospital. Earlier today, two of his regular nurses in the outpatient Amini hospital came over to say hi and see how Odin was feeling. Great people, great care. It looks like the fever may have been Engraftment Syndrome, which is indistinguishable from an infection. Either way, his temp is normal now. His recovery should be smooth sailing until his discharge. 🤞

Glad it wasn’t the 🌮, that Odin is feeling better and receiving such excellent care!xo

Update 7 of… Change of plans. Odin was talking about how much he wanted to eat at Taco Bell—never an appetizing meal to me. I knew he was sick, but damn. Well, he took his temperature and now it turns out he has a 101.1° fever. Which necessitated an immediate run to the Emergency Room. There was a risk of this happening—they said Day 7 or 8 was the highest likelihood of things taking a downturn. So we are spending the weekend here in an ER. So much for the Chalupa.

Outing my Taco Bell desires, guess my body thought better better of it.

Update 6 of … Engraftment has begun. Today is the first day that Odin has had an uptick in his White Blood Cell Count. His lowest was 200 WBCs per microliter. He's now up to 500. His hemoglobin has also made a small increase, which may mean that he doesn't require blood transfusions. So far, better than expected. As Mimi used to say “hes in good condition, for the condition he's in.” A fee more days of this and he will be transferred into the next phase, and after two more weeks from there, it will be time for us to all head home. Thank you to everyone for all of your support and care. Your donations are much appreciated and have made this stressful process far more manageable.

UPDATE 5 OF … Odin got his immune system back: they implanted his stemcells and he's now in the thick of it. The incredible staff at City of Hope sung Happy Birthday and gave him a 'birthday' cake—the cancer-ward perspective that his immune system has begun working like a newborn baby. The hard chemo hasn't really caused too much discomfort, yet. We've got another 9-14 days of toughing through the impact of all of this. Thank you all for the support!

Today's the big day. Odin gets a single dose of melphalan. It's the major chemotherapy—the one that makes the hair fall out and makes someone basically feel like they've got cancer. Tomorrow, the stemcell implantation happens. Odin will be immunocompromised and for at least the next week he won't be able to receive guests. Or touch anything. Or breathe outside air.

Update 3 of... Odin has successfully harvested enough stemcells to complete the transplant process. He'll be recovering this weekend, and then next week is the hard chemo treatment, followed up with the stemcell implantation. During this time, his immune system will be compromised, and he'll have a complete transfusion. His white blood cell count will be zero. The following weeks are going to be the real challenge. We're hoping for an uneventful procedure and rapid recovery. I'll keep you all updated.

After the first abortive attempt to do stemcell collection yesterday, it appears Odin is on track for epheresis today. His numbers look good enough to draw his blood, spin out the cells, add some calcium, heat it back up to a low par-boil, and shoot it back into him. 4 hours of sitting around watching the machines hum. They even have the machine that goes ping! 10 hour total day at the hospital today, and then back at it again tomorrow. Time for some black coffee...

I'm so thankful to all of you for all that you've done to support me and my family. I'm amazed by your unflinching generosity and selfless support. This comes not only from my friends and their friends, but from my brother's as well. Some of which I've never had the honor of meeting yet but hope to in the near future. You all are giving me inspiration not only to overcome this obstacle but to help others who encounter it as well.

UPDATE 1 OF... DUNNO Just injected Odin with his first (of 14) daily stemcell-stimulating prescriptions. Tomorrow morning he gets a Hickman valve threaded into his neck through his chest. It's basically a way to run his blood through an epheresis machine, very similar to dialysis. It looks like two RCA cables hanging off of his chest. They'll be running his blood through the machine, spinning out the heavy stemcells for use, and then putting his blood back into his carcass. Regularly. The goal is to bank a sufficient volume of stemcells to be used for 2 treatments—because he's about to get the *big chemo* dose. After this, his cancerous plasma cells will be killed along with healthy ones, too. I'll be keeping all of you updated on how things go, but will probably spare you the goopy, bloody picks of the Hickman valve 😬. Instead, here are some diagrams the Doc knocked out to describe the whole procedure.

I want to thank everyone again and specifically those who donated anonymously because I wasn't able to write them a thank you note. All of you donors have provided me a huge mental boost.
