People praising me as a father is by far the most meaningful compliment I can ever receive. It’s not coincidental this recognition is so significant; and can be attributed to my relationship with my dad. Even as a young lad I recognized Jeff Green was deep with a cool disposition. He showed me how to treat others and be a good person. Even when I wasn’t always right, I knew I was always loved. While most kids were embarrassed by their parents, I would be the first to proudly say “That’s my dad!” and give him a big hug. The music I listened to, movies I watched, sports I played, and sense of humor I acquired we’re all influenced by him. These days, as you probably can guess, he’s given me a blueprint to be the father I’ve always wanted to be.
In 2013 my dad lost his job. This is when he started to lose his way. While trying to make a new life for himself, he discerned he was a burden to his loved ones. Feeling like he had to escape rather than asking for help, he went back to his hometown, Erie PA, to simplify life. Going to Erie initially helped but inevitably made him lose his purpose. After battling depression for last seven years he felt like he had nothing to live for and couldn’t see a way out.
On April 20th, I received a call from my uncle that my dad stabbed himself three times (stomach, chest, and neck) with a kitchen knife. His heart stopped when he was initially admitted to the hospital and he had to be resuscitated. At this point, I didn’t think I was going to see my dad again. I immediately got in my car and drove thirteen hours to Erie with the hope my gut feeling was wrong.
Miraculously, after two surgeries the doctors stopped the bleeding and repaired the internal damage that had been done. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to see my dad because of Covid-19 but I was able to speak with him. He’s gone from being on a breathing tube and barely being able to open his eyes, to having full conversations with me and trying to stay hopeful about the future. I’ve let him know that I understand it’s going to be a long road, but he won’t have to do it alone.
I believe my dad is still here for a reason. And if you believe the universe is indifferent, I’m certain it still favors those who take action. I’ve had far too many “hang in there dad” conversations and would like to be more proactive. The first step would be to take him to a clinic to heal his mind. I’m looking to take him to a place that will factor in biological, psychological, social and spiritual influences to look at the whole picture. I believe he can get better through healthy habits and building a life for himself that he can be proud of. The ultimate goal would be to get my dad back to Atlanta and close to his grand-babies. I’ve seen him do very well for himself and I know he can thrive again if I help him find his purpose.
I have set up a PlumFund to get my father the care he needs to get back to his former self. If you know me, you know I rarely ask for anything from anyone. Under these circumstances I have to be honest with myself and admit I need help. If you aren’t able to donate please share and say a prayer for my dad. Thank you 🙏🏻
