Pepé Is a 9 month old sweetheart who recently became very ill. The cause of his illness was diagnosed as an unusually large intrahepatic liver shunt, which is a birth defect affecting less than 1% of all dogs. Essentially, Pepe’s portal vein that carries the byproducts of his protein digestion from his small intestine to his liver for processing has an extra vein (shunt) that is diverting much of this digested protein material around the liver and dumping it directly into his blood stream without proper filtration. This is what was making him feel so sick, so our vet put him on some medications that helped Pepe’ feel much better right away. These medications, however, can only provide a temporary fix due to their toxic effect on the liver and dogs only survive 9 months on average with only this approach.
Fortunately, Pepe’ can be fixed permanently with an innovative surgical procedure pioneered by veterinarian surgeon, Dr. Bill Culp, who is the leading authority in the U.S on Pepe’s condition and happens to practice just a few hours away from us at the UC Davis veterinarian hospital. We communicated with him and he is available to perform the surgery on Pepe very soon. This surgery will cost between $9,000.00 and $11,000.00. My fiancé (we’re getting married this June 22) is a new high school teacher and I am still completing my teacher’s certification hours, so I won’t be able to start work as a teacher until next year. This expense is far beyond our financial capacity right now, but we are determined to help Pepe’ get this life saving surgery. Thank you so much for taking the time to read about Pepe’ and for any help that you feel you want to offer him.
