Until a couple years ago, I was working as a scientist and raising my son. I struggled to make ends meet constantly and made the decision to make a move to improve our future. Going back to college in my late 30's to earn my master's degree was a serious undertaking. With an undergraduate degree in chemistry, going for my master's in engineering was a difficult transition requiring me to get up to speed on engineering principles most students in the program already had. I took this challenge in stride, putting in the extra time and gaining the knowledge I needed. The cost of the program, and more importantly the cost of living and providing for my son as a single parent during this time required me to take on a significant debt. I believe the sacrifice will be worth it down the road as I will be able to provide better for my son with the advanced degree. In the short term, however, it is rough. Starting over in a new field with an excess of debt is overwhelming. I will continue to carry on, but the one thing I missed out on was the opportunity to have a graduation party! My hope now is to reach out to my family and friends with an opportunity. If you feel you'd like to give a graduation gift to help give us a boost on our journey, and to celebrate the hard work this accomplishment took, it would make an impact and be appreciated!
