I am running 50 miles in the footsteps of P-22 (mountain lion of Griffith Park) on my birthday - 11/25/2018 - to promote coexisting with wildlife in Los Angeles.
What a great city we live in - Los Angeles - one of the largest city in the United states surrounded by magnificant wilderness - Santa Monica Mountains, the Angels National Forest, San Bernardino National Forest, and many areas within the city such as Griffith Park, Baldwin hills, Verdugo hills to name a few. We also have the great LA river running through from the valley to the Pacific Ocean. Coexisting with wildlife has always been an issue. Unfortunate encounters with bears and coyotes have increased as we build more and more into their habitat which is also increasing the risk of brush fires. Animals have been confined to a small region due to the freeways that cut off their mobility. Many animals at the top of the food chain are showing up dead due to consuming poisoned animals from rodenticides. But it doesn’t have to be this way!
I want to spread awareness that there is a way for us Angelinoes to coexist with wildlife. We can be the model of metropolis that all other cities can follow. I am very frustrated and saddened every time i hear of set backs by the government on public lands and wildlife protection. Its overwhelming but I thought if we start from our local issues, we can make a difference.
P-22 is our iconic mountain lion that somehow made its way into Griffith park from west of Santa Monica mountains. Beth Pratt-Bergstrom from National Wildlife Federation has been leading the effort for the wildlife crossing over the 101 freeway. Last year she had hiked the route that P-22 took and that is the inspiration behind my project to run 50 miles on my birthday this year.
I have chosen 3 organizations to distribute funds I raise with the help from you.
savelacougars.org - campaigning to build the wildlife crossing to save the mountain lions from extinction
clawonline.org - Citizens for Los Angeles Wildlife is creating solutions to ban rodenticides among other efforts
kitten rescue.org - a feline rescue working to make LA a no kill city
please specify which organization you would like your donation to go to.
I am a trail runner that traverses these wilderness on foot all the time, and i couldn’t be happier if I can give back in any way.
many thanks!
