I am running 50 miles in the footsteps of P-22 (mountain lion of Griffith Park) on my birthday - 11/25/2018 - to promote coexisting with wildlife in Los Angeles.

What a great city we live in - Los Angeles - one of the largest city in the United states surrounded by magnificant wilderness - Santa Monica Mountains, the Angels National Forest, San Bernardino National Forest, and many areas within the city such as Griffith Park, Baldwin hills, Verdugo hills to name a few. We also have the great LA river running through from the valley to the Pacific Ocean. Coexisting with wildlife has always been an issue. Unfortunate encounters with bears and coyotes have increased as we build more and more into their habitat which is also increasing the risk of brush fires. Animals have been confined to a small region due to the freeways that cut off their mobility. Many animals at the top of the food chain are showing up dead due to consuming poisoned animals from rodenticides. But it doesn’t have to be this way!

I want to spread awareness that there is a way for us Angelinoes to coexist with wildlife. We can be the model of metropolis that all other cities can follow. I am very frustrated and saddened every time i hear of set backs by the government on public lands and wildlife protection. Its overwhelming but I thought if we start from our local issues, we can make a difference.

P-22 is our iconic mountain lion that somehow made its way into Griffith park from west of Santa Monica mountains. Beth Pratt-Bergstrom from National Wildlife Federation has been leading the effort for the wildlife crossing over the 101 freeway. Last year she had hiked the route that P-22 took and that is the inspiration behind my project to run 50 miles on my birthday this year.

I have chosen 3 organizations to distribute funds I raise with the help from you.

savelacougars.org - campaigning to build the wildlife crossing to save the mountain lions from extinction

clawonline.org - Citizens for Los Angeles Wildlife is creating solutions to ban rodenticides among other efforts

kitten rescue.org - a feline rescue working to make LA a no kill city

please specify which organization you would like your donation to go to.

I am a trail runner that traverses these wilderness on foot all the time, and i couldn’t be happier if I can give back in any way.

many thanks!

Akiko

Latest Update

I want to thank you again for your donation. This platform allows to continue for additional 30 days to raise funds, and we have 2 more days left. Since the fire, we have heard of heart breaking news that P-74 and P-64 did not make it. Several organizations have begun working to restore the burn area. I have decided to split the donation between http://savelacougars.org/ and samofund.org Please help spread the word Thank you and happy holidays!

I am overwhelmed with all your support! What a nice surprise and the greatest birthday gift to find out that more folks have donated while I was out on my adventure! With the help of my husband who was the one man traveling crew and few of my close friends, I was able to complete the 50 miles that P-22 is said to have traveled from Agoura hills to Griffith Park. I was also surprised and happy to discover that more of my running friends had made a finish line celebration for me. I started a little after 6 am when the sunrise made even the scorched mountains look beautiful. We are truly lucky to have such wilderness surrounding our city and I hope I can contribute to the revitalization of the wilderness and wildlife we lost. This platform allows for another month of fundraising. As of now we have raised close to $700. I will update again. Thank you!

Hi everyone - thank you so much for caring and contributing to my cause. Who would've thought that our mountains would all burn down.. The wildlife that survived the fire will face a new challenge now that they've lost their habitat. I went to check out the burn area today and it is as devastating as I thought it would be. But I want to believe that nature will be resilient and know what to do to recover. I will have to adjust the beginning of my route but I am still going forward with my run. I will also be talking to Beth about which organization will benefit most from your donation towards recovery efforts. Thank you again - it really means a lot to me that you care. - Akiko
