Donyell Smith is undertaking a bold endeavour, moving to Georgia to grow her buisness, Jade Hands Massage LLC. She aspires to create a safe space for people of all body types, centering on BiPOC, and underserved individuals. To do this, she will need capital. Donyell is saving $3,000 for the move and needs another $7,000 for 2-3 months worth of expenses (including but not limited to business relocation expenses and establishing housing).
She is leaving the small town of Rochester, for the first time, to rebrand her business. With ingenuity, she will network to establish a base clientele. Donyell believes in having rapport with whom she serves. Trust in her is gained from how she engages with people. She creates a safe and nurturing environment for people to be heard while meeting them where they are. This is part of establishing herself as someone worthy to share space and time with.This is how she builds trust with individuals in Rochester. This is how she will connect with people in Georgia.
Donyell is looking forward to a fresh start. Though a daunting move, she is not one to ask for help. She is a giver. That is why she became a massage therapist in the first place. As an advocate and member of the black queer community, Donyell understands the need for healing touch. She understands the need for clear consent, respect of boundaries, respect of all bodies, and respect of space. Donyell takes pride in the care and support given before, during, and after massage sessions. Clients say they feel a sense of renewal, ease, and at times even catharsis.
When Covid-19 hit, Donyell was one of many who were out of work and out of funds. When her part time job reopened, it was a struggle to get back on her feet and start saving again. Mobile service expenses increased as she had to obtain personal protective equipment such as masks, shields and cleaning supplies needed to decrease the spread of Covid-19. Though, unlike some, Donyell is no stranger to cleaning. Even before Covid, Donyell worked to create a clean and welcoming environment for clients indoors or outdoors.
Now, the decision to move was not easy, but it will allow Donyell to reach more clientele and gain the capital needed to aid those who otherwise could not afford her services.
Donyell’s goal: To create a trauma aware safe space in which all bodies (esp. Black and underserved community members) are welcome.
