I was raised by a single father. Mom is not dead, she is an addict & jailbird since i was 6. The details are overwhelmingly unpleasant. Dad was able to keep my big brother and I comfortable and safe on a mason’s salary. One year he made just $8,000. My brother Tyler had Asperger syndrome in the years after my mom left. He was able to overcome so much but still needed to live with dad. Tyler unexpectedly died in his sleep last year. He was 37.

My father has lapsed back into a somewhat normal state. He loves warm weather and the sea. But he does not smile nearly as much. He has never known a lot of joy other than us kids. Shortly before Ty was gone, Dad had a stroke, too. It blinded him in one eye.

His mother is still alive & lives with a common law partner. He spends all of his time at her place now and...it’s a strain on her and Jerry (the partner). My dad is lonely. He does not sleep in our house anymore. It was an unexpected effect of my brother’s death. He is floating.

Me and Dad communicate through out the day but I live in New York City.m, he in North Carolina. We cannot move back into the near-derelict house where my father and brother lived. We cannot move into my 91 year old immigrant grandmother’s small house.

I want to buy a house where our family will live for decades to come. I want to show my dad hope. And I make a good money. I am actually very blessed to have had my work recognized and rewarded throughout life. This is why a mortgage is no concern to me. My career is extremely secure. But then the issue remains: the down payment. Who knows someone that has $25,000 sitting around? Not my dad. Not my grandmother. But I do. I do know people with money to spare. Am I talking about you? If you’re asking yourself this, the answer is probably yes.

So I ask, with as much grace as possible, that you help me pay a downpayment on a house. The promise of people has always been a presence in my life, and I hope I am not dishonoring it or you with this outright request. Please give as much as you can. I solemnly swear every damn penny will go straight to this down payment. I love you. Thank you.
