Two Educations by Robert Lilly
“Philosophers have long conceded, however, that every man has two educations: That which is given to him, and the other that which he gives himself. Of the two kinds, the latter is by far more desireable. Indeed, all that is most worthy in man he must work out and conquer for himself. It is that which constitutes our real and best nourishment. What we are merely taught seldom nourishes the mind like that which we teach ourselves.”
-Carter G. Woodson, The Miseducation of the Negro
Ever since my youth I have taken pride in owning my own public library card. Education means the world to me. My very first serious book was a picture book on the holocaust. Reading was both an escape from the isolation of my ghetto life into the expanse of a vast and unknown world.
At seventeen years old, in a juvenile facility for delinquent and troubled boys, I enrolled in my first college classes. I graduated a year later from the institution, released to go home after three years detention. Now out of juvenile with the intent to continue my education I lacked guidance and support.
Time passed. I languished in society. Repeated bad choices eventually landed me in adult prison. Three times now and I have been struck out.
The Criminal Legal system has labeled me a repeat or “habitual offender.” I rebuke their attempt to stigmatize me.
Despite my errors, I know I am capable of so much more. This letter does not permit me to detail all the twists in the plot of my life.
What I want you to know is that I have never stopped trying to go further, learn more and do better. I am physically in prison but mentally and emotionally and spiritually free. Now older and wiser and more equipped to do the work of healing.
I have enrolled in a seminary program to be a Christian counselor because at my core I am a “helper.” However, I truly desire more academic training. Unfortunately, I have a barrier. I owe money to my last university, Abilene Christian University (ACU). A balance of $1,000 prevents me from obtaining my transcripts which keeps me from enrolling in another accredited university or proving I have a bachelor's degree. I also require books and must pay tuition for the program I am currently enrolled in.
My vision is to be an agent of change as a Restorative Justice Community Organizer. My hope is to return to my community as an asset. My heart is for all the others like me who have lost their way.
My appeal to you is for your generosity to help me pay off the balance and complete my current program and prepare for another advanced option for education next.
Thank you and may God bless you and your family. I cannot do this on my own.
-Robert Lilly
