**UPDATE AND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT**

Hello friends and community!

Thank you for all your support and donations to Kwanda’s fund. Every dollar donated secures the resources she needs and helps create a path towards healing. We are so grateful for all the engagement thus far!

August 6, 2011 was the date of Kwanda’s wedding. On this day, we ask everyone to find 6 friends who can all donate $6 to the fund, and then those 6 friends pass the challenge on. Let’s build this network into something beautiful and powerful. Let’s get #6ByThe6th and lift Kwanda up. Thank you.

Hi Siblings and Friends,

This is a Call-to-Action to create a collective legal aid fund on behalf of our sibling Kwanda and her tender-aged daughter. Kwanda is a domestic violence survivor who has confided in both of us about her struggle for safety and security over the last several years. She recently secured physical independence for she and her daughter, but her journey has not been easy.

As a low-income mother and full-time student, she has taken the initiative to research and find a well-qualified legal Counsel. However, Kwanda has extremely limited financial options to pay the retainer and the anticipated cost of protecting her rights in family court. We are coming to the larger community to help Kwanda, through this direct aid, to have lawful representation as she secures stability for she and her daughter. She has already done research to identify an attorney with the requisite expertise to protect her in court.

As part of Kwanda’s support system, especially as her white siblings, we both have volunteered to coordinate and organize a fundraising effort to pay for her legal fees for divorce and child custody. We have known Kwanda collectively for more than 25 years. We have witnessed her own advocacy for survivors of domestic violence, sexual harassment, and sexual assault. Around the world, domestic and sexual violence rates have spiked as a result of the coronavirus outbreak. More folks are quarantined with their abusers, unable to access safe spaces and unable to leave the environment they are in.

For more information about this wider issue, please refer to the United Nations Women here (https://www.unwomen.org/en/news/in-focus/in-focus-gender-equality-in-covid-19-response). We also recommend the UN Women video by Nicole Kidman: Play your role in ending violence against women https://youtu.be/uddNvBu0MV8. If you want additional educational or resources to support efforts to end gender-based violence, we can send some suggestions.

It is now our turn to advocate for her. It is imperative that the community come together to support Kwanda as she finishes her graduate degree, raises her daughter, and takes steps towards much-deserved restoration and independence.

Kwanda has done the below to take positive steps toward her goals. Let’s pitch in whatever we can so that having the funds for this attorney can move from being her goal to her reality.

She participates in services for survivors from local and state-wide domestic violence agencies and services. After one acute domestic incident, she and her daughter moved into a temporary emergency shelter.

She secured permanent housing.

She has attended Self-Help Clinics.

She consulted with free/reduced legal assistance.

She adjusts and revisits her safety planning.

She has identified an attorney and the fees required to attain their services

Our goal is to raise $15,000 to secure one particular Family Law firm who will be the best advocate for Kwanda as she takes this next step in separating from her abusive ex-husband and continue to provide a loving and supporting home for her daughter.

Since this is an ongoing case, it is important that certain details remain confidential, but we can come together to help Kwanda in her time of need. On the other hand, transparency is very important to us. We are more than happy to show where the donated money will go, what accounts it will be deposited to, and how it will be used. Please reach out to us if this is something that you would like. We hope you will join us as we support Kwanda and her daughter. Please do not hesitate to contact us with questions.
