Originally from Kingston, Jamaica, Kim arrived in the U.S. when she was 13 years old and has dedicated her life to working for social and environmental justice specifically organizing around justice for LGBTQIA+ Black, Brown and Indigenous communities for over 25 years. She is deeply committed to conservation and increasing environmental education for Black and Brown peoples with an emphasis on honoring, preserving, and cultivating indigenous ecological knowledge.
A vegan for over 26 years (vegetarian 4 years before that), she has spent most of her life on a plant-based diet and has worked towards educating other BIPOC on the benefits of a kinder, healthier and more just way to approach food as a means of Black liberation.
Having lived in different parts of the US for three decades, Kim is now back in NYC where she continues organizing in an effort to ensure the creation of spaces that center the most marginalized, including non-humans. She is a co-founder of the North Bronx Collective- a womxn and queer IBPOC-led formation whose work is centered around food liberation as well as amplifying housing and workers rights. She is also an organizer with Black VegFest; a vegan festival dedicated to celebrating Black lives. As is the reality for Black womxn who dedicate their lives to collective liberation, capitalism is an incessant nuisance that results in all sorts of insecurities, including housing insecurity. It’s well known that there is a manufactured shortage of affordable and stable housing in NYC. Our sister Kim is being forced out of her sublease and has to move during a pandemic with her elderly mother. Expenses include, first month, security and a broker’s fee totaling $6,500. Let’s show up for Kim and reciprocate the love she gives our communities daily. “...love has been our survival."- Audre Lorde.
