My employer recently disclosed the company is going to be dissolved by the end of this year and resurrect under an new corporation in a different state. This could happen as early as JUNE. They will not be offering severance to employees they let go and those they do offer positions for under the new corporation will not be given compensation to relocate.

One way or another I will have to relocate by 2020. Staying with my current employer would be unwise so I am looking for other full-time employment. In addition to lack of security, this job has been responsible for unbearable stress and anxiety. The work consumes more of my time than a 40 hour work week as management (not located in the US) uses Skype to communicate with employees stateside after business hours. The little free time I have to myself is utilized almost entirely to decompress. Simply put, this job is killing me slowly and has been for years.

A number of factors make this situation a ticking time bomb:

1. If the company does dissolve by June, that gives me only 5-6 months to find a new home and a new source of income; 9-10 months if it dissolves by December.

2. Continuing to stay in California (financially speaking) will be all but impossible. While the state minimum wage is expected to increase to $12 per hour next year, there’s no guarantee I’ll find employment within the necessary time frame to move. Even if I do, for what I pay in rent here for a converted garage in my landlord’s home ($1,300), I could pay a mortgage on a home or condo (or at the very least a multi bedroom apartment) in Las Vegas. My goal would be to move into a unit with a rental cost of $800 per month or less. Since I have family that live there and I visit every year, I know the area fairly well and believe I could make a new start there. Additionally, the reason I rent directly from a homeowner in the first place is because renting from a corporation/complex almost always requires proof of income 3 times the amount of rent and in some cases credit approval. By the time this all goes down my credit may have improved enough to qualify but my income most likely won’t for LA county. Even if it does, If I relocate to Nevada instead, I may make less than I do here but the cost of living in general is also significantly lower.

3. The average cost to relocate is about $5,000.00 and with no available credit or saving due to living paycheck to paycheck, this is next to impossible. I would need 3 times that amount to not only guarantee proof of income in a qualifying amount, but to also guarantee I would be able to cover rent at a bare minimum for 1-2 years in case my company dissolves before I find a new employer. I don’t have any doubt I would eventually find a new employer at a reasonable wage, but the time-frame being unpredictable is what frightens me.

My hope is that I can complete this fundraiser by June of this year. If 3,000 individuals could donate just $5.00 that would make goal. Additionally, if each donor could find it feasible to set aside $12 this year and pledge my Patreon at only $1 per month (cancelling your pledge if you so choose in December), that coupled with the fundraiser and my current income would cover all bases and contingencies for whatever happen 6 months to a year from now.

I am technically not in dire straits yet. If you feel as though you money would be better utilized contributing to other marginalized people in worse situations, by all means explore the #TransCrowdFund, #DisabilityCrowdFund and #FemCrowdFund on Twitter.

If you do decide to make a one time donation or pledge my Patreon (or both) thank you in advance and know it means more to me than you could possibly realize.

JULY 2019 UPDATE:

As of last week (July 2019), all employees FINALLY got an official confirmation that they had indeed started up a new subsidiary in Texas. However, the specific rumor that their current California branch would be dissolved was unfounded. The subsidiary in Texas will be a skeleton crew only; operations in California will continue as normal.

With my job no longer in jeopardy (baring some other weird whim of the owners), moving out of state is no longer an absolute necessity. While reducing my housing costs would still be ideal, the cost of uprooting/relocating is still quite high compared to moving within the state to a different location and remaining employed. Now that I have the proper credit profile, I don’t have to rent off-the-books from homeowners. I can either rent an apartment from a corporation or I could potentially rent an actual home (not just a spare room) from a smaller pool of homeowners within my price-range.

With that in mind, I’m reducing my fundraiser from $15,000.00 to $5,000.00 to stay within Los Angeles county but move to a better rental. I greatly appreciate every dollar received.
