Friends and family, I'd like you to join me in fundraising for a dear colleague of mine, Jenny Ward, and her husband, Dane.

Jenny and Dane's Story:

Jenny and Dane moved to Boone, NC for a wonderful opportunity to be a part of the rising tide of Appalachian State University in June of 2017. Their first official event fell on their 30th wedding anniversary, and they rejoiced as everything fell magically into place. They were able to sell their Illinois home, find a beautiful mountain home, and were welcomed into the warm and welcoming community of Boone. They looked forward to being fully involved in the university and community as new members of the Mountaineer family.

Soon after their arrival, however, Dane started having troubles with his left foot. Several months later, he was diagnosed with a rare disease Jenny and Dane had vague knowledge of - ALS, a disease with no cure.

In the last year, ALS has robbed Dane of his ability to run, hike, and walk in the mountains that he loves and calls home. His muscles are gradually weakening and every week he loses a bit of his strength. However, his mind is sharp and his spirits are high. He loves App and his library team, and he faces every day with a smile. He is taking on a role of advocate, researcher, and guinea pig as the money raised from the Ice Bucket challenge has given rays of hope to those suffering from ALS.

Though most of Dane's medical costs are covered by insurance, all of the medical equipment and home modifications (braces, ramps, safety bars, stair lifts, walkers, special clothing, helpers at home, utensils, etc) are not covered by insurance and are being paid out of pocket by Jenny and Dane.

In every way, ALS has taken a toll on the both of them. Dane is learning to use a power wheelchair, a four hundred pound beast, and will be able to take it to work, the Greenway, ASU football games, and enjoy the mountains he loves once they have a van to transport Dane and his wheelchair.

The costs are staggering, and that's where your help comes in! New disability vans for ALS patients cost $65,000 +, and used van prices vary. Jenny and Dane are searching for a van that has a side entry and ground clearance for the Boone Mountains and snow, which is likely $35,000-50,000 if they can find one.

With Jenny and Dane's permission, I would like to start this fundraiser to cover part of the cost of a used disability van for Dane, whose hopes are to conquer ALS and be able to enjoy the High Country in all of its glory.

Any and all donations, prayers, and thoughts will help! I hope you will join me in this endeavor and help move mountains for Jenny and Dane!

Much love,

Natalie
