Having worked as a health aide at the VA Medical Center for four years, Dionne has grown attached to many of the veterans there. She always takes the time to sit with them and listen to their stories. And she’s learned that many of them are unhoused.
As Dionne says “You talk to them and hear their stories and you feel bad. Somebody gotta help. I want to be a part of that.” Her vision is to provide a home for these veterans where she will cook for them, bring them to appointments, and provide them with a sense of community.
Now her dream is coming true- the VA has gifted her with a house, located near Lehigh Ave and 23rd St, that she can use once she fixes it up. But the house needs a lot of work. We’re raising money to get the roof replaced, the interior cleaned out, and the electrical wiring fixed. The house also needs a washer, dryer, and refrigerator.
At a time like this, when thousands of people in Philly are experiencing homelessness or at risk of becoming homeless and the city continues to do nothing, housing efforts like Dionne’s are becoming increasingly vital. Please help Dionne reach her goal!
