CA53 Community Debate

After nearly 2 decades representing California’s 53rd District, Susan Davis is retiring. There are many candidates running for her seat, and Indivisible would like to host a community debate to help voters get to know the leading progressive candidates* ahead of the primaries, which will be held on March 3, 2020!

This debate will be held at 5pm on January 12, 2020, at the La Mesa Community Center. (RSVP and further details will be available soon!)

Indivisible is a grassroots community organization focused on informing and engaging citizens so that they can more effectively participate in their democracy. A coalition of local Indivisible groups** in District 53 is collaborating on this debate. In the past we have had many of our events at small local venues that we are able to use for free, but we want to open this debate to as many people as possible. As a result, we are raising funds to be used for the following:

$952 for the venue, which includes:

-- Capacity for 250 (With sufficient interest and funds, we can increase to 350)

--Ample parking & access to public transportation

--Security

--Childcare space

$48 for printing & promotional materials:

-- Materials for signs

-- Promotional flyers & materials

Can you help chip in and share with your network? Any amount helps!

* There are a number of candidates running for this seat. In order to narrow down the options to allow for in-depth questions and responses, we have invited candidates who had raised at least $6000 via donations of $200 or less, according to FEC filings as of Dec. 1st. Those candidates are:

-- Jose Caballero

-- Janessa Goldbeck

-- Georgette Gomez

-- Sara Jacobs

-- Joaquin Vazquez

** Current Indivisible co-sponsors of this debate are:

-- Indivisible CBFD

-- Indivisible San Diego Persist

-- Hillcrest Indivisible

Latest Update

The debate is TODAY! We will see you at 4:30pm! There was so much interest in the debate that we sold out earlier this week, just as several articles were published about the race and this debate. As organizers we decided to pay the extra $96 to add more seats and the extra security guard required by the venue. We do not want to turn anyone away. We are hopeful that those who find today's debate useful will be willing to donate, as we are still below our goal. Thank you to all that have contributed both in funds and in time!

Thank you so much to our donors so far! Right now we've reached almost 40% of our target goal, but we are feeling optimistic. This past week we paid the balance on the venue and tickets went live. If you haven't already reserved your seat, you can do that here: bit.ly/ca53debate This race is crowded with great progressive candidates, and I'm looking forward to this debate as a way to hear even more from them. I'm so grateful to you for helping make this a reality. - Sara K, Indivisible San Diego Persist
