We all aspire to create meaningful change in the world around us. We would like to introduce you to a group of youths who have a plan to do just that. The Armada Abroad Program (AAP) is a cultural exchange program sponsored by the Armada Boosters Club, in which Albany Armada Aquatics swimmers bring real, concrete benefits to partner communities while stimulating mutual and reciprocal learning opportunities.

For our inaugural cycle, AAP will be partnering with the Kliptown Youth Program (KYP) in South Africa. Our goal is to create a sustainable swim program in Kliptown that will make a lasting impact in the KYP community. 15-20 Armada swimmers will travel to the Soweto Township to teach swim lessons to roughly 100 KYP scholars. Our planned dates are July 23rd to August 12th, 2020.

We are very excited to have the award-winning KYP program as a partner. KYP was founded as an after school tutoring program but has blossomed into something much bigger. The program provides athletic and arts programs in addition to academic support for the community’s young scholars. Here is a video featuring Assistant Director Thanduxolo Bezana that provides more background on KYP’s mission and impact.

A sustainable swimming program at KYP will help address drowning rates, one of the leading causes of death in South Africa, as in other developing countries around the globe. Due to restricted access to swimming pools and beaches under the segregationist apartheid system, Black South Africans are disproportionately affected by drowning, including in urban, inland areas such as Kliptown.

In addition to the two weeks in Kliptown, AAP participants will embark on a year-long process of learning and preparation that will help to develop their skills, competencies, and empathy. Armada swimmers will become CPR/First Aid and swim instructor certified and will engage in a course to learn about South African history and culture. While in South Africa, participants will be accompanying the KYP scholars alongside some of their daily activities, including a scheduled excursion to the National Museum of Apartheid. Participants are required to fundraise a significant portion of their trip expenses and have already begun doing so.

We are requesting your assistance in order to launch this program for our swimmers and the KYP scholars. Sending one Armada swimmer to Kliptown would provide swimming lessons for five KYP scholars, and help to support coaching staff who will train instructors at KYP, creating a program that has the potential to reach not just this generation of KYP scholars but future generations as well. The program will also create a unique and meaningful intercultural experience for the AAP participants by encouraging them to use their experiences in and around the water to enrich the lives of others.

The Armada Boosters Club is a 501(c)(3) organization, all contributions are tax deductible.

I am honored to be part of the AAP. I am so excited to have the opportunity to go to Kliptown, South Africa and teach kids how to swim. I am also very excited to learn more about the culture there!
