Started by: Renegade Theatre Company
On June 1st, 2020, in the midst of one of the most difficult global pandemics and human rights revolutions in modern history, Renegade Theatre Company, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, was founded and created to deliberately interrupt the racial status quo by giving voice to artists of color and reflecting a world where color is the norm and not some superficial goal. In that moment, many chuckled at the idea of an arts organization launching in the midst of an economic downturn, with no true donor support, financial backing or stake-holders. Just a dream for change. Soon after the launch, Renegade found its place into the hearts of a community of people that were hungry for that change, art, innovation and connection. As the hype ramped up, we knew one thing to be true…..
Renegade is not just a moment. Renegade is a movement.
Now, it’s only been 9-short months. Renegade has taken the community by storm; superseding expectations, goals and records and providing over 75 students and their families with innovative, affordable, safe and fun arts access and education! To this day, the community is still in awe at how we were able to produce an original Movie Musical titled: “Wild + Free” (which was streamed internationally and shown at our local AMC Movie Theatre), 3 Cabarets (one for spooky season, one celebrating the divas of the music industry and one celebrating Black History), a new student play festival, (which featured original plays and a musical written, directed, designed and performed completely by students), began rehearsals for “Once On This Island'' the musical, a story of colorism and its affects on the world, which will open this Spring. And, thanks to a generous grant from the Community Foundation of Broward, Renegade has partnered with InsideOut Theater Company on an Art of Community Project which is set to give a platform and podcast for community members to speak on social justice as ways to build a more empathic society.
In the midst of all that, Renegade has offered a full suite of classes, workshops and camps in acting, singing, dancing, directing, stage management and more for students ages 9 to 25, while also declaring itself a hub for student growth academically and socially: offering the “Renegade Academy” for students who needed internet access, tutoring and special assistance while wading through the complex online-school model and small community hangouts like Game Nights, Karaoke Nights, Movie Nights and so much more. In addition to providing access to equitable arts education, our organization also helps our Black & Brown youth facing discrimination and racism in daily life. But, the work is not done. Therefore, neither are we!
Our work needs to be here. Our work deserves to be here. And with most of the families and children that we serve representing some of the most marginalized groups in today’s society, it is our time to be here! And we need YOU in order to continue to be here. It's time for the Revolution 2.0
Renegade Theatre Company started its original renovation process completely community funded, with 5 students and the Executive Artistic Director throwing paint on walls and laying floor tiles in a building that had no A/C or power. Now, with the constant growth our organization is experiencing, it's time to give the students, families and community access to bigger studio spaces, a rehearsal hall, a fully equipped blackbox theatre and access to a space and equipment that is up to the caliber that they deserve. We are back, calling on our village to help us grow!
We are asking you to help our organization push toward change. Giving Renegade Theatre Company a tax-deductible donation today (even in small amounts) is a key way you can help us continue doing the work of healing our community and its youth and teaching transformative justice principles. Your donation helps amplify the mission of Renegade Theatre Company and help us help our youth, in many ways, fight for their lives.
