ABOUT JVDI
The Joint Villages Development Initiative (JVDI) is a grassroots non-profit organisation that serves communities in the rural and peri-urban areas around Zomba, Malawi. Although Malawi has made significant strides in its development in the past few decades, it still counts as among the poorest countries in the world. Malawi has the fourth highest percentage of people living in extreme poverty in the world, with over 70% of its 18.6 million people living on less than $1.90 USD/day.
JVDI’s goal is to implement thoughtful, well-researched projects that are deeply rooted in actual community needs. We partner with established Community Based Organisations (CBOs) who have a history of successfully implementing improvement projects in their respective villages. We also partner with the Zomba district government, other local NGOs, and technical experts from around the world to ensure that our projects will be socially, environmentally, and financially sustainable in the long term.
Our key areas of work include:
-Water, sanitation and hygiene (WaSH) improvements
-Sustainable management and utilization of natural resources to mitigate climate change effects
-Alleviating poverty issues among the ultra-poor (e.g., people living with HIV/AIDS, orphans and the elderly)
-Training and education for people of all ages
We have 4 partner CBOs and NGOs that cumulatively service over 5000 people in rural Zomba. These partners are:
-Zomba Urban Women AIDS (ZUWA) Support Group
-Tikambirane
-Chinamwali AIDS and Youth Foundation (CHAYOF)
- Mtiya
DECEMBER 2020 FUNDRAISER: WATER AND SANITATION
Most people in our partner villages have experienced shortages of drinking water, water for regular use, or both. This is due to a number of factors, including:
-Few water points/boreholes for potable water, requiring many people to travel long distances and stand in line for long periods of time
-Contamination of drinking water points
-Drought in recent years reducing surface water/rivers/rainfall
Disadvantaged groups such as the disabled and the elderly are particularly vulnerable as they are unable to walk the long distances and stand in long queues for water.
JVDI worked closely with expert WaSH consultants from the Centre for Affordable Water and Sanitation Technology to assess community needs. The fundraising goals below are based on the outcomes of these assessments.
PRIORITY ITEMS:
-$1900 CAD for three waterpoints* to service Mtiya, CHAYOF, and ZUWA CBOs (Includes building materials, labour, and a connection fee)
*Waterpoints are taps that connect to Zomba City’s municipal water infrastructure, and which transport treated water to communities. Concrete structures make up the foundation for the piping systems.
SECONDARY ITEMS:
-$2000 CAD for well pump repair for Tikambirane CBO
-Tikambirane is located too far from Zomba City for a water point; a well/borehole is costly, but is the only option for this area
-One of their existing wells is broken; the $2,000 CAD will cover costs for repair of the hand pump and training community members to repair it themselves in the future
-Any leftover funds from the $2,000 CAD, and any funds in excess of our fundraising goal, will go to towards building a new well in Tikambirane
TERTIARY ITEMS:
-$550 CAD NGO registration fees for JVDI
-Attaining NGO status allows us to broaden our potential sources of funding and ensures that our future projects will have meaningful and lasting improvements on the livelihoods of community members and the environment in the region in Malawi.
TOTAL FUNDRAISING GOAL: $4450 CAD
Please note that there is a 2.9%+$0.30 CAD fee on your donation if you choose to use PayPal/Credit Card. If you wish for us to receive 100% of your donation (and if convenient for you), please select the Cash or Cheque options at checkout.
THANK YOU
Your donations this holiday season will ensure that community members have adequate access to safe drinking water throughout the year. If you have a preference for which item you want your money to go to, please indicate it in the donation comments. We will not be able to issue tax receipts this year as we are not yet a registered Canadian charity.
To thank you for your generous donations, we will be sending the following:
-To donors of over $100 CAD: a personalized handmade drawing by children in the communities where the project will take place
-To donors of over $200 CAD, a personalized handmade drawing and a video from community members
The communities involved will benefit greatly from your donations. On behalf of all of the lives that you will touch through supporting our fundraiser, we are grateful for your generosity!
